Checkups and Cleanings
Protect Your Teeth and General Oral Health
It is important to have regular dental examinations of your mouth for the early detection and treatment of dental problems such as cavities, tooth and gum infections, and even oral cancer. By not allowing these conditions to worsen, you are able to achieve and maintain a better quality of life.
Oral hygiene is an important factor in safeguarding your oral and overall health. Your recall cleaning visits ensure that plaque and tartar are fully removed from your teeth. Polishing is performed to remove any remaining surface stains. Fluoride may also be applied to your teeth to help make them stronger and more resistant to acid, produced by germs in the mouth.
Teeth should be checked and cleaned at least twice a year, though we may recommend more frequent visits.
During your recall appointment, Dr. Ismail-Juma will be able to inform you of your current state of oral and dental health, and thereby alert you of any problem areas that may need a little more attention from you at home.
Gum Assessment and Treatment
A good dental cleaning visit involves more than just polishing your teeth. In order to treat and maintain the health of your teeth and gums, the tartar (which contains harmful germs) need to be removed from your teeth by scaling.
For most people, this is easily accomplished during their recall cleaning visits.
However, in instances of more advanced gum disease, it maybe necessary to treat some areas of your mouth with simple, surgical gum procedures.
Should this be necessary, Dr.Ismail-Juma will be happy to discuss your treatment alternatives with you.
Bonded White Fillings
Do you have one or more of the following?
- Decayed, cracked or broken down teeth
- Chipping or worn down teeth
- Unaesthetic spaces between teeth
- Concerns about the mercury found in your silver fillings
- Concerns about the general unattractive appearance of your teeth
Éthen you might choose to have composite (tooth-coloured) fillings placed on your teeth.
Although they are typically placed in your front teeth, it is often possible to fill your back teeth with these bonded white fillings.
Dr.Ismail-Juma will be happy to discuss your concerns with you and offer the treatment alternatives that are best suited for your dental needs.
Root Canal Treatment
For Hurting and Diseased Teeth
Many people believe that removing or extracting a problematic tooth is the best solution. However, what is not realized is that other problems such as loss of chewing power and shifting of other teeth may actually arise.
In order to save an infected but otherwise sound tooth, the inside of the tooth (the root canal) is thoroughly cleaned and filled with a special permanent medicine to seal it, after which, a filling and possibly a protecting cap is placed so that your tooth may be restored back to function.
Root canal treatment is commonly performed and usually lasts a long time, although on occasion, a tooth will have to be retreated due to new infections.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Don't Let Fear Prevent You From Having Great Oral Health!
Relax! Everybody feels some level of anxiety about going to the dentist. However, we can help reduce your tension so that you might even look forward to coming to see us!!
If you are nervous before or during your dental treatment, ask us if nitrous oxide would be right for you.
Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas”, is one of the safest sedations available. It is a colourless, non-flammable gas that is administered through a comfortable mask placed over your nose. It is easily reversible, and the relaxing effect lasts only as long as you are breathing in this gas.
Dental Appliances for Night Grinding
Night Guards are custom-fitted appliances that are used to prevent the harmful effects associated with tooth grinding or clenching. This includes excessive tooth wear, joint sprain, and tired and aching jaw muscles.

- tooth sensitivity

These customized appliances fit your teeth better than the “do it yourself” types purchased from a retail store.
Not only are these mouthguards easier to wear, but they are more efficient in providing you with the protection from injury that you deserve.
Teeth Whitening
Having whiter teeth has become the primary aesthetic concern of many patients.
Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the colour of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the attractiveness of your smile.
As teeth whitening is not permanent, a touch-up may be needed every few years, and more often if the patient smokes or drinks coffee, tea or wine.
Dr. Ismail-Juma can help explain the teeth whitening process and encourages regular visits to help maintain a beautifully bright, white smile.
Veneers
Veneers are often a good solution for enhancing and changing your smile without placingÊ full caps or crowns on your teeth.Ê
Veneers are custom-made, tooth-shaped, porcelain facings, approximately the thickness of a fingernail, that are bonded to the front natural teeth. The shade(colour) is chosen by the patient in consultation with Dr.Ismail-Juma.
Are you displeased that your front teeth display or have one or more of the following?
- Permanent stains or discolouration that cannot be professionally whitened
- Worn down or chipped enamel
- A crooked or poor shape in their appearance
Please make sure to ask Dr.Ismail-Juma whether you are a candidate for veneers.
Porcelain Crowns
Tooth crowns or “caps” are fitted over the entire tooth surface and match the shape and size of your teeth. These can be fabricated in porcelain*, metal or as a combination of both.
They are used to protect teeth that may be easily broken due to:
- a large filling
- a large cavity
- having undergone root canal treatment
...
or they are simply used for cosmetic improvement!
*Porcelain Crowns are tooth-coloured crowns that are potentially matched to the colour of your teeth - giving you a natural and beautiful smile.
Fixed Bridges
Close the Spaces Between Your Teeth Without Having to Remove Them at Night!
Bridges consists of artificial teeth used to fill the gap created by one or more missing teeth, which are anchored to caps (“crowns”) that are permanently fitted to your existing teeth.
The benefits for placing a fixed bridge include:
- Preventing your remaining teeth from shifting out of their original position
- Improving your chewing and speaking ability
- Improving the appearance of your face and your smile line
- No more having to wear a removable partial denture (“false teeth”)
There are different types of fixed bridges Ð the most popular one is the tooth-coloured porcelain fused to metal which combines both appearance with strength and durability.
Dr. Ismail-Juma will be pleased to discuss with you the types which are suitable for your dental needs.
Dentures
Dentures are a removable set of false teeth that very much match your natural teeth, and are made for chewing and enhancing your smile by filling up the gaps created by missing teeth.
There are two types of denturesÉ complete and partial.
Complete dentures are needed when all the teeth are missing in one arch.
Partial dentures are made when there is still some natural teeth present in the arch.
Getting dentures requires several appointments and may take several weeks to be fabricated.
If you require the removal of your front teeth and are concerned about your appearance during this process, please talk to Dr. Ismail-Juma about our Immediate Denture.
With an Immediate denture, we can make your dentures before the necessary extractions, and then place them in your mouth on the same day after the teeth are removed!
Implant-Secured Crowns, Bridges,
and Dentures
Fix Bite, Cosmetic, or Joint Pain Problems Which Have Been Caused by Missing or Shifting Teeth
Dental implants are a fine alternative when choosing to fill gaps with fixed false teeth without utilizing your own teeth. They are also an excellent choice to secure and stabilize your denture and help keep them from moving.
Implants are artificial roots (usually made of titanium) which are surgically placed under or through your gum. They are positioned in your jaw bone in the same area where your teeth used to be.
Once the implants have fused onto the bone, they are ready to be attached with artificial teeth. They may also be fitted with anchors for your removable dentures.
Dental implants can last many years. However, occasionally they will need to be re-tightened or replaced due to normal wear.
By providing you with naturally looking teeth with excellent support and stability, implants not only increase your comfort level when chewing and speaking, but helping you to smile with confidence by restoring or enhancing your dental appearance.
Child Dental Care
Cavity prevention should be instituted at an early age.
At Wilmot Dental Office, we are happy to arrange for a first time quick visual check of children as early as 2 years old. Not only does this help the little ones to get used to the dental office, but it also helps identify those children in need of dental treatment.
Generally we start seeing children from age 4 years and up.
Our child-friendly waiting area features a toy box which is very popular. Children can read, colour, or even just watch tv.
After their appointment, your child can choose from a variety of goodies from our gift box.
Dr. Ismail-Juma and her entire staff strive to make your child's dental experience friendly, positive, and as anxiety-free as possible, every time they come visit!
